I was first introduced to Martin Luther King's I Have a Dream speech in high school. My American History teacher, Mr. Macpherson, assigned the class a comparative project and I asked him for some advice on a topic. He looked at me intently and said, "I know a topic that will really interest you." He recommended that I compare the lives of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. Mr. Macpherson loaned me an old VHS tape of King's speech and this tape changed my life. (and I think I got an A on the project) I hung on King's every word, completely agog. Even now, my heart races whenever I hear King's inspiring words. Why in the world had I never been told about this guy before the twelfth grade?
Why would anyone want to kill this dynamic man? He was a true revolutionary and a hero. Why is it that anyone who suggests that people be nice to each other gets killed?
4% of the world population lacks a conscience. So why are they winning? Hate killed Martin Luther King. Are you going to let Hate get away with that? I seriously don't know what's more disturbing; violence or complacency. Don't excuse people who kill for no other reason than to protect their right to hate. There is no excuse. And for God's sake, don't let Martin Luther King's Dream die. It lives in us. In his own words, "Let Freedom Ring."
We are ALL Brothers and Sisters.
Please watch this video and let it inspire you the way it did me. I hope that someday Canada will recognize Martin Luther King Day. His Dream is every bit as much for Canadians as it is for the Americans.
Peace,
Allison
